A Grande Prairie-based entrepreneur has launched an online shopping platform to market African products to the world.

Launched earlier this month, Ejibola Adetokunbo-Taiwo’s Made by Africans website currently features African clothing, shoes and sandals, jewellery and accessories such as handbags, aprons and cushions. The aspiration of the platform, ultimately, is to become a sort of Amazon for African products, Adetokunbo-Taiwo said.

That’s the essence of this platform, to grow it to that level where the world can say, this is the place to go if you want to buy anything made by an African,” she said.

The site currently has 33 sellers, most of them from Adetokunbo-Taiwo’s native Nigeria. When she started working on the idea two years ago, she networked with entrepreneurs in her home country.

“We started from Nigeria, then we started pitching to Ghana, South Africa, Kenya,” she said.

One of the vendors is Kene Rapu, who named this month on Forbes Africa’s list of 30 under 30 young entrepreneurs.

“That’s huge for us, because having somebody like that on the platform shows there’s a lot of good things coming from Africa,” Adetokunbo-Taiwo said.
